Piotr M. Szczypiński

Biographical Note

Prof. Piotr M. Szczypiński has been affiliated with the Institute of Electronics at Lodz University of Technology since the beginning of his professional career, where he currently serves as the Head of the Medical Electronics Group. He specializes in computer image analysis, with a particular focus on medical imaging, the analysis of biological materials, and three-dimensional modeling of anatomical structures. His research interests include image processing methods, feature engineering, deformable models, and their applications in medical diagnostics and food quality assessment.

He completed his studies at Lodz University of Technology, where in 1995 he obtained a Master of Science in Engineering in electronics and telecommunications. In 2001, he defended his doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Andrzej Materka, devoted to deformable models for image analysis. He received his habilitation degree in 2013 in the discipline of biocybernetics and biomedical engineering at the Silesian University of Technology, presenting a monograph on the analysis of images from wireless endoscopy. In 2025, he was awarded the title of Professor in the discipline of computer science and telecommunications.

Since 2000, he has been engaged in scientific and teaching activities at the Institute of Electronics. His research work includes the development of deformable models for 2D and 3D images, methods for analyzing texture, color, and morphology, algorithms for three-dimensional modeling of anatomical structures, and computer-aided diagnostic methods. Solutions he has developed have been applied in ultrasound heart image segmentation, capsule endoscopy image sequence analysis, modeling of blood vessels in the diagnosis of aneurysms, and the assessment of food quality, such as cereal grains and potato tubers. He has also collaborated with industry on the design of image classification systems for production processes and quality control.

He has led several research projects among others funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), including projects on image analysis for consumer behavior assessment, automatic grain classification, and computer-aided diagnostics of the gastrointestinal tract. He has conducted extensive research in cooperation with international scientific institutions. For two years, he worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States, focusing on expert systems, endoscopic image analysis, and biological material analysis. He also completed research visits at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in India, the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences, and Technische Universität Berlin.

He has supervised two doctoral dissertations and more than thirty master’s and engineering theses, and for many years has chaired thesis examination committees. He is an active reviewer for scientific journals and conferences published by IEEE, Elsevier, Springer Nature, and others. In his teaching activities, he has developed numerous courses in signal and image processing, computer graphics, analog electronics, radio systems, and biomedical statistics, delivered both in Polish and English.
